Imagine this:

You have harbored a dream for years. Every time you considered making it into a reality, life has taken over and for one reason or another, to date, it hasn’t happened.

Now, picture this:

You are getting older and you would like to see this dream through before it’s too late. You decide that one way or another it is time for this dream to become a reality. You FINALLY begin to make those plans knowing that, yes, you are going to see this through.

Over the next days, weeks, months (however long it takes to get this plan up and running) you can’t help but feel an excitement you hadn’t felt since you were a kid. This is a big deal and you can’t believe it, but yes, you are finally going to see your dream through and the thrill and the anticipation is unbelievable.

This is going to be a most memorable experience. One that was a long time coming and will always be set in your memory as one of the best things you ever did for yourself.

Why am I bringing this up? Because this is exactly what I am currently experiencing. Let me take you back and explain.

When I was young, like first and second grade young, I lived in Montana. I loved it there. My father had a job that had us moving around the country every few years and when we left the state, I promised every friend as well as myself that I would move back there once I graduated from high school (although I secretly hoped it would be sooner).

Well, the years passed and I never forgot what my intention was. I loved Montana and the West side of the US. There just wasn’t any other place I wanted to live. After I graduated high school and tried getting up the nerve and a solid plan so I could move back, I met my husband.

My husband had a big, close-knit family, and wanted to stay right where he was. I loved the family and so I agreed that we would stay in the state and within a few miles of where we both had grown up. The big selling feature was that it would be wonderful for any kids I might have to grow up with so much family around. This was a big deal to me because I had no family other than my parents and sister that lived in the same state as me. I had always wished to know my aunts and uncles and cousins well and to be able to really have a close relationship with them. But, at least my kids would get something that meant a lot to me that I never got to have myself.

Unfortunately, several years later, we divorced. Because we had joint custody, I was now chained to a state I had never had any intention of staying in.

The years passed and the kids got older. It became more and more possible to see the potential in finally planning a move out West. I considered the kids and where they planned on living after graduating. I didn’t want anyone to feel left behind and thankfully, they had some similar plans of their own. They knew where I had been wishing to put down roots and I was lucky enough to get a great deal of encouragement from them to see my dream through.

The last possible snag (and this was a big one) was what my current husband would think. He has family in town and a good job to boot. He has always lived in the same place and I didn’t know if he would be interested in setting up across the US. Well, I got VERY lucky! He has been feeling cooped up and is ready for an adventure. I am thrilled.

We decided the best plan would be to sell the house, buy an RV and drive across the US to our destination. I am not good in situations where I have to sit long periods of time in small quarters. Because of my fibromyalgia it gets to be quite painful. So, an RV is a perfect option because I can move around and stretch out.

We are going to travel and do some sightseeing all along the route on our way to our destination. Once in the state, we will take time and check out different neighborhoods before deciding on our new home. Once we know where we want to live, we will sell the RV and buy our new house.

The best part of this whole adventure is that I will be writing a book about the entire experience. I have always wanted to read a book about someone getting brave enough to throw caution to the wind and start over somewhere else. Reading about what that would be like, the ups and downs and if it was the dream they thought it would be is now going to be my book to write.

So, I am putting this out to you. Live your life to the fullest. Go after your dreams. There is no time for fear or doubt in life because life is too short. It can end at any moment so make each of those minutes count.

Have you gotten brave and followed your dreams? I’d love to hear what you have accomplished or are working on even if the odds were against you in the comment section below.

  2. After I graduated High school, my family did the big move to North Idaho from California. I was just 19 years old at the time. I love where I live. I met and married my husband here, we bought our house together here in Post Falls. I was six Months pregnant when we moved into our forever home. To me it turned to be my forever home since both my husband and son has gone home. Enjoy your new adventure. You will never live to regret this decision. If you do move to Montana, I could maybe visit, depending on where you new house is, I only live a few hours away.

    • Thanks Lynne. It’s nice to finally have a definite direction. Up until know I have written and scraped so many ideas because they would feel forced or they bored me or truly didn’t resonate with me. I have found what I really want to write most and I’m so excited to see what will happen along the way.

  3. Wendy,

I enjoyed this article tremendously because it epitomizes everything I believe about living my life and living it to the fullest, especially about realizing dreams today rather than putting off until tomorrow.
