Article by Wendy McCance

You have a dream and you are plugging away at it.  You spend hours each day trying out new ways to reach your goal.  On occasion you fall into a slump and have to get back up and continue to push yourself.  Are you taking advantage of everything that falls in your path along the way?

Sometimes, actually more often than you might realize, opportunities will present themselves right under your nose.  Your job is to recognize the opportunity and seize it without any hesitation.

Let me give you some examples from my experiences today.

My day began with a message on Facebook from a friend.  It was a link to an article about a social media company.  My friend wrote, “hey, this sounds like it is right up your alley. You should check it out.”  I went right to the link and looked over the information.  What I saw really was a perfect fit.  That little voice inside my head brought up the negative immediately though.  I thought about the fact that this company wasn’t actively looking to hire a freelancer (or that is what I assumed).  I felt uncomfortable writing an email out of the blue asking the owner if they would be interested in my services.  I came close to passing up what could be a great opportunity.

I realized I had nothing to lose.  I knew I would regret not taking a leap and seeing if something might come of it.  I wrote the email.

Later in the afternoon, I got a request to connect with someone on LinkedIn.  I could have just accepted the request, but instead,  when I accepted I also wrote back thanking them for connecting and mentioned that if they were ever in need of a freelance writer/social media consultant to please keep me in mind.

I received a message back saying that they had just posted a request for a social media consultant on Elance.  We are in the process of discussing a job opportunity.

I have been working on my Twitter account and have put some additional effort into getting to know each of my Twitter connections.  I retweeted a post from a follower and commented on their article.  It was a terrific article and I just had to let them know.

I got a message back from the follower thanking me and they mentioned that we should work on a project together.  They live in the same area as me and they have a writing background as well.

I keep thinking of ways to expand my reach and the idea came up to do a press release on my social media consulting business.

I was on the internet and found a terrific site with 50 great places to submit my press release.

The point is, I have stayed as aware as possible to those subtle opportunities to expand my career.  If I get an idea, I just jump in and try it out.  If I have something passed my way, I take it seriously and look into it.  If someone reaches out, I mention what I have to offer in the most subtle way as possible.

I see opportunities, ignore my inner negative voice and proceed.  If you are frustrated with your progress, take some sort of action.  Anything helps.  Mention you are looking for clients to your friends and family.  Update your social platforms or write a post on your blog.  Get out there and do some networking.  Any action will start the ball rolling again.

All you need to remember is to watch for those moments when there might be an opportunity.  Don’t let that negative voice keep you from taking a chance.  You have nothing to lose by trying.

Eventually, you will be amazed at how quickly opportunities begin to gain steam and opportunities will seem to appear more often.

Wishing you the best on your road to success!

  1. Hi Wendy…This post offers great advice and encouragement AS USUAL! You are one of the best cheerleaders in the blogosphere. Thank you for continuing to share such helpful information and your generosity in sharing links and info both here and on FB. In turn, this month for my 2nd Annual Gratitude Challenge I am posting links to all my favorite bloggers who posted something related about gratitude and/or thanksgiving and of course I had to include you! Here is the post incase you didn’t see it: http://smartliving365.com/second-annual-smart-living-30-day-gratitude-challenge-2013/ Thanks again for all you do! ~Kathy

  2. Hi Wendy,
I just told my husband something similar to this yesterday. I said that whomever said that God works in mysterious ways wasn’t paying attention. I am very happy to hear about your wonderful opportunities. Thank you for passing them along to us.

    Sincerely,
    Karina

  3. Hi Wendy - this is something I needed to hear. I’ve hesitated, big time, looking for online work for fear of getting into another situation I was in most of my life — feeling stuck.

If I could have my dream job (are you listening universe?), if would be plain, old typing, envelopes, data entry or fill in the blank forms. Something easy I could knock out here at home and still take pride in. My brain is tired from all those years of giving my energy away.

So, I took your advice and went back into Elance and, at least, I took my first step to update my profile. It’s been something that’s been nagging at me for awhile now. Will see where the next step leads.

Thank you for the nudge, nudge, nudge. I needed it. 🙂

    • I am so happy to hear you took that step. Just remember, the more you focus on what gets put in front of you each day, the more opportunities will present themself. I know it sounds a little whoo hoo, but it really does seem to happen that way. 🙂

      • I agree, Wendy. Just haven’t been willing to take the plunge. I did bid on an Elance job today. It a small start — taking baby steps, at least in jumping through all the hoops to get everything set up.

Thanks for the nudge. I needed it. 🙂

        • Every step should be considered a big step. Just think how much further ahead you might be each time you take a leap. I think it’s fantastic that you bid on a job. Celebrate the fact that you did it. Never make yourself feel bad that you didn’t do more. There is always more that can be done so if you look at progress as no big deal and don’t congratulate yourself, you won’t continue to take those chances. I am proud of you!! 🙂
