Inspiration Makes for the Best Writing Material

The First Draft

Article by Wendy McCance

Have you ever gone through a case of writer’s block?  Have you ever felt as though you had no good writing material to use?  What was going on around you when you faced this obstacle?  I ask because I think that how easily you can come up with a topic, feel passionate about it and be able to knock out the article quickly all come from what is going on in your life at the time.

Have you ever noticed that during times of stress when you are overloaded with obligations your brain seems to slow down and the creativity is harder to grab at?

The same can be true for moments when life is feeling easy and free, but not too much is going on.  You might be happy and content, but there has been a lack of excitement, of trying something new, of no drama or challenge that has made your brain feel a little bland.  What are you going to write about?  It can be difficult and frustrating.

I believe that writing is like the life you lead.  You need that balance for things to flow at maximum capacity.  Too much strife and your head might be too clogged with worry to pull a story out of it.  Not enough challenges, new experiences, or opportunities for those ah ha moments and your life and your writing will feel uneventful and dull.

The solution is to find ways to minimize that feeling of being overloaded and overwhelmed while finding moments where you can challenge yourself or get some enjoyment that is a little out of the everyday way you go about your business.

Balance is the key.  Find that joy.  Give yourself a reason to want to write about an experience.  Be good to yourself and you will be rewarded with some good writing material.
