How Long is Your Cool List?

I believe that in life, you can see how well you are living your life and how much you have challenged yourself by putting together a cool list. What is a cool list you ask? A cool list is a list of all the cool things you have ever done. You know, those things that excite you to talk about, have tested your abilities, have helped you to overcome fears or make dreams come true. A cool list is something everyone should create on occasion to check how well you are taking care to take care of yourself well.

Just out of high school I had so many things I wanted to explore. I just couldn’t settle on one particular thing. I wanted to do it all and I was frustrated when teachers and parents and friends and schools all used the same mantra. What do you want to be when you grow up? Pick something. PICK ONE THING TO DO FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE!!! Yeah, I don’t think so. What about growth and change and new interests and living an extraordinary life and I’m supposed to pick just ONE thing? I just couldn’t.

So, I bucked the system and chose to do as many things as I wanted. I wanted to experience everything that interested me and so I set out to do just that.

I tried different hobbies and I had many jobs and I would have turned more of those hobbies into paying jobs if I had the experience to do so. I had this way of trying to kill two birds with one stone. If I found something I enjoyed, wouldn’t it be spectacular if I could make money to do what I loved? I found ways to accomplish this inventive way of thinking quite often and with a great deal of success. It is true that if you do what you love the money will follow!

So I turned a love for beautiful furniture and decorating into a job working as an interior designer. I turned a passion for real estate into becoming a real estate agent, I turned a love for wine into a job selling wine and spirits to on-premise accounts, I turned writing into a freelance writing business and so on.

Of course some things never made it to job status. I loved flying and was learning to fly a Cessna, but finances prevented me from completing my time up in the sky so I never became a pilot.

Currently I am learning how to be a songwriter. Fingers crossed down the road an income might come from this new venture, but even if no money shows up, it’s a hell of a lot of fun.

So, my question to you is what does your cool list look like? Are you satisfied with what you’ve accomplished or do you have some work to do?
