Small Improvements Make Major Differences in Your Career

Article by Wendy McCance

I read an article the other day at Entrepreneur.com.  It was about making small improvements in everything you do and how it affects you in the most positive way.  It was the best article I have read in quite a while and really rang true with what I have been trying to achieve.

I have been working on examining each area of my business and deciding how I can improve on each thing I do, even if it’s very small improvements. I have done this before with great success.

Why does this work?

Each day I write articles, go to my social media platforms to post, comment and share and prospect for business.  After awhile, it becomes second nature and habits grow.  You lose your focus and get so comfortable that you are working without putting much thought into how what you are doing is affecting your outcome.

When you start to pull apart each step taken each day, not only do you find ways to improve what you thought was already running well, but your creativity takes off.  It’s incredible how new thoughts emerge and ideas can become big turning points in your business.  I have seen it happen so many times and it gives me the same excitement as when I first started my business.  It refreshes your thoughts, refocuses you and gets you pumped to get working each day.

Here are some of the things I have been doing to improve upon my business:

BLOG

1.  I reviewed my website and looked at each button on the dashboard for ways to improve my settings.  It was a brilliant move as I found a mistake that had made a huge negative impact.  You can read about my experience and the business I lost because of my mistake here: Warning!  Missed Opportunities When You Don’t Update Your Website

2.  I looked for new plugins and have been making some adjustments with the way I share article information on my social media platforms.

3.  I have been updating each articles meta tags, focus keyword and description of articles.

4.  I have been checking for broken links.

5.  I’m looking at a new tool called Walk Me.  It looks like it will be an easy way to implement tutorials on a website.  The whole process looks like it might not be too difficult and I’m excited to look into the possibility of adding a new feature to this site.

TWITTER

1.  I have been trying to implement Twitter cards.  A summary card with a large image.  When I post an article, instead of my tweet showing up and a “view summary” comment added where you have to click it to see an image, the image will appear the moment the article is tweeted.

I am still working on this and have a plugin installed, but images showing up are sporadic.  More research will need to be done to fix this issue.

2.  I have put a new focus on who I want to follow and it has been paying off.  I have been thrilled to see some of the new followers I have been able to attract.  I’ve had some great interactions as well.

3.  I am looking at using a new tool called Topsy.  It looks like you can get a lot of information about your tweets from it.  I am not sure if it will be more beneficial than my analytics page on Twitter, but I’ll be checking it out in more detail.

PINTEREST

1.  I have added a new board for sponsored posts.  All of the sponsored posts I have done are on this board.  I figure it’s a good way to show potential clients some of the work I have  done.  Who knows, maybe it will help me get new business.

2.  I have been adding images of items I sell on my Amazon stores on this website with a link back to the correct pages to up traffic and make more money.

FACEBOOK

1.  Facebook is next on my list.  I have saved some information and will be testing out some new ways to get more interest in the items I post.

So, there you have it.  These are the things I am working on to improve my business.  This is just the beginning.  As each item is ticked off, I will be searching for even more ways to make improvements.  Besides Facebook, I am looking into:

  • Improve where I show up in search results for key words like: freelance writer, Michigan writer, social media consultant etc…
  • Finding new ways to prospect for business.
  • Creating an eBook.
  • Putting together an online class.

and on and on….

Can you see how small improvements could make a big difference in your business success?
