The Comfort of Fall

Fall Sampler

This morning my husband got out of bed and I rolled over to take up the space he vacated.  There is something about the warmth that is left behind when he gets out of bed that comforts me.  I snuggled in and fell back asleep.

Fall is my favorite time of year.  It brings with it the same comfort as the warmth of the bed where my husband had been sleeping.  There is something about the chill in the air and the comfort of a cozy sweater.  The crispness of the outdoors and the crunch of the leaves when you take a walk. The colors in the trees and in the fall flowers seem to magnify themselves against a gray background.  The world feels alive and vibrant even as nature gets ready to go to sleep for the winter.

Home is the best place to be in the fall.  Cooking in a crock pot and letting the smell envelop the house as your meal cooks all day.  Lighting candles that smell like vanilla or pumpkin spice or cinnamon. Burning sticks in the evening while you sip hot cocoa or coffee laced with Bailey’s.  Fall is truly a time to find comfort in the small things.

Fall is the time of year to go on family outings.  The cider mill, the farmer’s market and walking the trails at the park seem so comforting.  I think it’s a combination of being outside and scenery that’s not quite as loud and bustling that creates the comfort.  You can really take in your surroundings and appreciate them without all of the noise and distractions of many family events.

I’ll be mournful as fall comes to an end and is replaced by the cold, stark, dreariness of winter.  I think the timing of Thanksgiving, religious holidays and New Year’s is so appropriate to occur in November and December.  I look at it as a way to ease into those cold, sad days with a little cheer before the grayness overtakes the world and shuts it down for a few long months.

  1. This is nice, Wendy. I can feel the things you are describing. Though I’m not quite ready to let summer go, I know it’s time. There’s more I wanted to do and places to go and yet fall is calling me back in the house just like when I was a kid and my mother called me in from playing.

I feel the crispness of the air and smell the changes in the earth. I take comfort in that the cycles of life know better than me when to take the time to reflect and appreciate how we’ve grown and what we’ve done. It’s sweet.
