The Fourth of July

I hope you had a good Fourth of July.  With weather breaking heat waves and areas with no power, it had been an odd Fourth of July for much of the country.  Here in Michigan, we had quite a strange day as well.

Yesterday we hit 102 degrees.  During the day there was kayaking and swimming.  As the day progressed and the heat became unbearable, storms began to roll in.  Around 6pm the family was getting packed up to go over to my mom’s house for dinner and fireworks.  There had just been a very heavy downpour, but it looked like that was the end of the storm.

My mom lives about 10 minutes away from us.  When we got to her neighborhood, we were shocked.  There were tree limbs down and leaves from trees scattered all over the ground.  There was also hail littering the lawns.  Almost the size of golf balls, the hail was literally everywhere.

My mom was relieved to see us as she had worried about us travelling in the storm.  We must have been just behind it because we didn’t experience anything in our neighborhood like what we saw.

The evening was nice.  We ate picnic food.  There was hamburgers, hot dogs, potato salad, baked beans, fruit salad, potato chips and brownies.  My daughter had made some sugar cookies with vanilla frosting and strawberries on top which were a hit.  Needless to say, we ate very well and the food was delicious.

Sadly, the rain continued.  There was a ton of thunder and lightning and we left earlier than we had planned.  The fireworks by my mom’s house are always spectacular and missing them was a bummer.  We didn’t think they would go on as planned because the storm seemed to be endless.

When we got home, the kids were exhausted and my son went to sleep soon after.  The girls ended up getting a show from our front porch.  We saw some great fireworks people in the neighborhood were shooting off.  We got comfortable out under the covered porch and watched for a while.  I found out today that surprisingly the show in my mom’s neighborhood went on as scheduled.

I hope everyone had a great Fourth of July.  The storm picked up speed again late last night and knocked out power all around town.  We are fortunate to have power, but it’s going to be another scorcher and not much fun for those without any power.  Hopefully, this crazy weather will come to an end and we can enjoy summer the way it is meant to be enjoyed.

  1. What a bummer. Rain storms can have a way of changing plans… don’t they? Dispute it all Ian glad you were able to have some fun. :)
