You are so Confident

You are so confident is a phrase I hear a lot. People I don’t know will write to me and that phrase some how will make its way into the message I am sent. It gets me every time. I always wonder what it is they see or read or interpret that makes them believe I am so confident. I mean, I have my doubts and insecurities like everyone else.

After I read an email today that used that same phrase, I decided to really stop and examine where this “confidence” they seem to see might be coming from in their eyes.

I can only speak from my interpretation of confidence, but I do believe that what people see in me is my authenticity. I live my life honestly and with vulnerability. Maybe it’s the artist in me, but my life doesn’t hold enough meaning unless I expose my thoughts and find ways to connect to others on a very intimate level. It’s where I feel most sane. Life is too dulled down when I don’t have a deep connection to the things, people and experiences around me. I get bored, feel uninspired and would rather take a long nap than go through a day in such a dull manner.

In my particular case, I have to admit, I can be a bit extreme. I am picky (huge understatement) about who I let into my life. I’ll be friendly to anyone, but only get to the heart of my life with people who can manage to do the same.

Even in business, money isn’t my motivating factor in who I work with. I will only work with people who are sincere, honest and have a passion for what they do. These are the people I connect to and who I feel I can really do excellent work for. I have no interest in working with people who play games or are willing to lie. I don’t care how much money they wave around, it’s just too stressful and I get absolutely no satisfaction out of those interactions.

Authenticity! That’s how I live my life. I am a straight shooter who isn’t afraid to express my thoughts. Not in a hurtful way, just in a genuine way. I just don’t understand why it’s not natural to be that way. I mean we are all born that way, how can people change so drastically as they grow up?

So, yeah, being authentic equals confidence in my book. What do you think? What makes someone appear confident to you?
