How I Made Money as a Freelance Writer in 2013

Article by Wendy McCance

I have spent this last year building a writing and social media business.  Along the way, I have given my readers advice on how to find clients, make money off of a blog, and everything in between that I have gone through and learned myself.

I have an abundance of readers who are taking the advice I have written and are striking out on their own.  I thought it would make sense to actually show you in detail how I made money this year.  Hopefully it will inspire you to keep plugging away at your dream.

Below I have listed each type of client I have worked with and the projects I have done for them.  I think there is no better way than to write it all out so you can see for yourself what a first year of writing and consulting can look like.  Please note that I didn’t work a full year.  I switched over to a writing career in April.  I got one client right away, but until my new website was up and running and I figured out how to go after business, I really didn’t start moving until July.

Obviously, there will be people who did much better than I did their first year in business and there will be people who didn’t do as well.  The factors that play into how well someone will do depends on sales skills, who you might already be connected to, perseverance, creativity and what areas of the business you are targeting.  I know that if (for instance) I had solely concentrated my efforts on writing for magazines, my list of projects would be much smaller.  It’s just a harder area to break into.

This list does not include money I made from the Amazon store.  I didn’t include the number of potential clients I turned down either.  I might do another post on that subject.  There were a variety of reasons I declined to work with some people. I think you would be fascinated to know how many people I turned away and why.

The only other thing that is not documented in the chart below is the number of clients who I am working with that will be starting new projects with me beginning in January.

If you have any questions, as always, please leave a comment.  I would be happy to answer anything that’s on your mind.
