We are only days away from the new year.  The hustle and bustle of the holiday season is now behind us.  As the year wraps up, I have been thinking about what I have accomplished this year and what I want to accomplish in the year to come.

I have an accomplishment journal that I keep.  Whenever something happens that propels me towards my goal or whenever something surprising, and wonderful happens, I write it down and date it.

This has worked out enormously well.  There have been times when I have felt stalled out and needed to remind myself that I have actually had quite an amazing year.  This is when I go to my journal and read it over.  It lifts my spirits every time.

It has been incredible to see how much I have grown and what I have learned about myself.  Having this journal really puts your life in perspective.  One of the best things I have been able to do is confidently go after bigger milestones.

The other day I was sitting on the sofa next to my son.  I had my laptop out and was checking comments on my blog.  My son who has been fascinated with the fact that I have a blog asked to see how many views and followers I have now.  He has been following my blog since the beginning and has enjoyed viewing my progress.

I showed him how much the blog has grown and we talked about where it had been only a month or two ago compared to now.  My son asked me where I would like to see my blog by the end of the year.  I threw out some numbers that I had been contemplating as goal numbers for a few days.  His reaction at first was to lower the numbers, he felt that I was taking on too much and that I wouldn’t hit the numbers by the end of the year.

I mentioned that if I went with safe numbers, numbers I was sure I could hit, what was the point of making a goal?  I feel that it is much more productive to get a little out of reach with what you want to accomplish.  Sure you might not hit all of your goals, but I believe you will push yourself further than you would have if you created something that felt safe.

After discussing this theory with my son, he thought about his own goals and how he went after the things in life that he wanted to accomplish.  He came to the conclusion that he wanted to push himself a little more and raised his own goals.

Going into the new year, I will start a new accomplishment journal.  I will ask my daughters what they would like to accomplish this year.  I hope they raise their goals and feel the same sense of ambition that my son felt when we spoke.
