Article by Wendy McCance

The other day I had written a post asking for advice about a few writing assignments I was contemplating doing.  I have written articles in the past for a variety of online sites.  I have never been paid to write an article, so this offer had me asking a variety of questions.

I wanted to follow-up and tell you how everything turned out.  As someone who is trying to create a living as a writer, I am always looking for information on navigating my way into a career.  Finding solid information about the little details can be rough.  Many times I feel like I am moving ahead blindly.

I have been particularly concerned with how to take on an assignment with a company without giving away all of your personal information.  Specifically, I had received an offer to write for a financial blog.  This company had reached out to me and I didn’t know much about the company.  Needless to say, I was skeptical about giving out too much personal information.

Well, it turns out that I was worrying for nothing.  The company asked me to write a sample article for them.  The article had to be a certain length and had to be written towards an audience in their 50’s who were looking down the road towards retirement.

I wrote the article, submitted it and waited to see what would happen next.  I was surprised to get a quick response.  Within a day I was given the job.  I will be writing one article per week with a goal of eventually writing three articles a week if the company continues to like my work.

When I write an article, I will send it along with an invoice to bill them.  At this point, I will be given a check.  So in the end, I didn’t have to worry at all about giving out any personal information.  I will be paid each time I write an article.  By the way, I will be paid $40.00 per article.

I hope this information is useful as you navigate your own way into a writing career.  There are people who will find you and ask you to write for them.  You won’t have to give out your personal information.  The pay you receive will be reasonable and worth your time.  Just think, if I can write three articles a week and find one or two other assignments, I can begin to carve out a decent extra income.

Good luck to all of you, and I wish you the best in making your dreams come true as well. 🙂
