December is here and it is time to reflect on what you have achieved over the year. How has your writing career panned out so far?  Are you happy with the amount of work you have been able to secure or do you feel like you need to find new ways to rev up your career?

Over this last year, I have written a few articles with suggestions on how to find work. The most popular articles have been:

  1. HOW TO FIND WRITING JOBS WHEN YOU ARE NEW TO FREELANCE WRITING
  2. SECRETS THAT NO ONE WILL TELL YOU ABOUT GETTING WRITING JOBS
  3. SECRETS TO GETTING WRITING ASSIGNMENTS PART 2
  4. THE SECRET BEHIND GETTING THOSE FIRST WRITING ASSIGNMENTS

After reviewing the articles I’ve written, I realized that I have more information to share with you.

One area that many people overlook is working with temp agencies.  A while back, a writer friend of mine asked me if I would be interested in a job she had been offered through a temp agency.  The company looking to hire a writer wanted someone who had a social media background as well as a writing background.  The job was not a good fit for her, so she reached out to me.

My friend told me that she had been working with a few temp agencies for quite a while and had been happy with the results.  I looked into a few of the companies she mentioned and was excited about what I discovered.

I spoke with a recruiter about the temp job my friend had mentioned and found out that (at least at their company) most writing jobs pay on average $25.00 - $35.00 per hour.  Taxes are taken out and paychecks are processed weekly.  The recruiter mentioned that many jobs offered at their company will pay a writer as much as $65.00 an hour.  Even at $25.00 an hour, it’s a nice amount of money to supplement your income during those times when you don’t have many assignments keeping you busy.

The recruiter told me that many writers will give him a call when they are between assignments.  They are able to fill the gap between their busy times quite nicely that way.  It’s a great way to keep a steady stream of income coming in.

I found out that one of the best parts about working with a temp agency is the exposure you can get from working with some high-profile companies that might have been out of your reach when prospecting on your own.  Many times, these companies will continue to work with a writer and hire them permanently once the contract with the temp agency has run out.

Another feature that has me sold is the amount of jobs being offered where you can work from home.  I am currently in talks with a company that is looking for someone to write website content.  The job is 100% working from home.  Of course there are jobs where you would work at an office, but I was happy to find out just how many opportunities there were for a writer who wants to work solely from their home office.

If you are looking for a new way to rev up your career, you might want to look into working with one of these temp agencies.  Below I have listed the two companies I have been in talks with and approve.  There is a list of some additional companies that can be looked into, just note, I haven’t reached out to these companies yet so I can’t give you any details on who they work with and how much they pay.

I wish you the very best and hope 2014 is the best year yet in your writing career. Hopefully, the suggestion of working with a temp agency has got your creativity going and you will figure out even more unique ways to make a good living as a writer.

The Two Temp Companies I have checked out and highly recommend:

1.  Vitamin T

2.  Aquent

Additional temp agencies you might want to look into:
*Please note, these are suggestions, but not agencies I have personally looked into yet.

1.  Filter, LLC

2.  24 Seven Talent

3.  The Creative Group

4.  Onward Search

5.  Paladin Staff

6.  Razorfish

7.  The Boss Group

If you have has any experience with a temp agency, I’d love for you to leave a comment about your experience.
