Summer Goals

When the kids are home from school for summer break and time slows down a bit, do you take a break too or do you use the time to pursue some of your own interests? After a busy year of activity, I am looking forward to working on some of my own goals.

I have decided to challenge myself. I am going to see if I can write a children’s book over the summer. This is a first attempt at writing a book and so I decided to do something short just to work through the process and gain some insight into what it takes to write a book. I already have an outline and I have a few books in hand that will guide me through the writing process.

I am looking at writing a book for ages 5 - 9 and in that category, I am estimating that I will be writing somewhere between 500 to 800 words. It’s a very comfortable length for a first try at a book.

I figure that I will have a good solid rough draft done by the end of the summer and fingers crossed will have found a great person to help edit the book before tearing it apart to write a second more polished version.

When you think of it, my blog posts tend to run between 500 - 1,000 words. It puts the amount of words that will go into a story into perspective. I think the most challenging part of writing the book will be cutting it down to make for a complete and enjoyable story without going into a great deal of detail.

What about you? What are your summer plans? Will you be relaxing by the pool? Taking a vacation with the family? Working on some personal pursuits? Let me know what your summer will look like by leaving a comment below.
