The How To’s of Starting a Blog. Where to Find What you Need.

Question Box

I have been getting several requests for help starting a blog.  I wish I could spend time with each reader who was interested in putting a blog together.  It would be fun to walk them through the process and throw around suggestions on format and plugins. Unfortunately, I just don’t have that kind of time.

There are several bloggers who put together classes to teach people how to blog. You can pay money and get the help you are looking for.

I have always been that person who just wants to help.  As of right now, I can’t see putting classes together in my future.  I just don’t think it’s the area I want to expand into.  That being said, if you have a question, ask.  I am more than happy to help you through a moment where you might get stuck (if I know the answer).

My best advice though is to look through the archives on this blog.  Type in the word blog on this website and you will find an enormous amount of articles all about blogging.

As I started blogging myself, I wrote articles every time I learned something new. No matter where you are in the process, you will find articles on what platform I recommend (WordPress by the way), how to get more traffic, how to turn your site into a blog that does product reviews and so on.

When I began blogging, I had never read a blog and knew very little about using computers at all.  My kids used to tease me because of how little I knew.  I was stubborn and decided I would have a blog and I didn’t want any help.  I wanted to feel the pride of figuring it out myself.  My theory was that if I could put a blog together on my own, there was no telling how far I could go.  I would know that I was strong enough, smart enough and stubborn enough to find success.

I decided to use a WordPress platform by accident.  I did no research, I just picked it.  Looking back, I got lucky.  WordPress is a great platform to use.  The whole process took me 2 weeks.  I worked on my blog daily for hours at a time.  This is the best example I can give of someone who knew nothing about computers.  When I put my Skipping Puddles blog together, I had it down in about 40 minutes.  I would have had it done in half the time if I hadn’t spent so much time debating the way it should look.

The bottom line is that if you are interested in putting a blog together, all of the information is available.  Not just on this site, but across the web.  You just have to have faith and determination.  There is no need to pay someone to set up a blog. You can do it yourself.  The amount of pride you will feel will carry you far.  You won’t give up on blogging as quickly if you have put your heart and soul into its creation.

Wishing you all the best!

  1. I did a workshop on blogging last spring and put together step-by-step instructions. I should post them, too-but as you say, many others have done the same.

I also have filed and given out info on how to install widgets. I’d encourage anyone who’s starting a blog to install Recent Posts and Categories widgets. This makes your blog a lot more more user-friendly. So many things about blogging are a snap — once you know how!

Now I need to learn how to take an e-mailed image and install that in “Media.” Anyone care to offer a course? 🙂

    • If you do put your notes up on your blog, send me the link and I will mention it on this site and on my Facebook page so people have a place to get some more great info. As far as the email image, could you save it on your computer and then pull it up under your downloads?
